Pandora Handicap Goes to Conniver ConniverNips Nips Honeymoon at Belmont After Favored Carolyn A Is All but Left at Post PostBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L L N Y May 21 Starter George Cassidy achieved the seemingly impossible at Belmont Park today when he sent the four fillies and mares disputing the featured 7500 Pan ¬ dora Handicap away in four sections with Ben F Whitakers oddson choice Carolyn A last to leave the gate and last at the end of the mile Harry LaMontagnes Con ¬ niver who broke second took the lead soon thereafter and went on to score by a length and a half over W L Ranchs Honeymoon who was first out of the gate Abram S Hewitts Grillette finished three and a half lengths farther back and the same margin before the favorite Basil James rode Con ¬ niver who paid 570 and was teletimed in 137 over the fast track trackA A comparatively light crowd of 22305 turned out in mild hazy weather and the favorites fared about as well as usual at Belmont with St Jock and Be Sure re ¬ warding the form players in the second and fifth events Bobby Permane starred in the saddle with a double on Roy and Be Sure winners of the two juvenile dashes dashesLittle Little to Running After Start StartThere There wasnt much to the Pandora after the eventful start with Conniver never be ¬ ing threatened after she took command at the end of a sixteenth Grillette and Hon ¬ eymoon raced as a team most of the way behind the leader with Carolyn A trailing As Conniver came into the stretch in the middle of the track Grillette went to the inside whil Honeymoon charged down the far outside making UP ground steadily but never fillyHoneymoon menacing the Discovery filly Honeymoon who had been idle since October and unable to win in approximate ¬ ly a year after having compiled a brilliant record in 1946 turned in a promising ef ¬ fort The Beau Pere mare came out solidly bandaged but appeared sound during and after the race which should have done her some good Carolyn A was never a serious contender after being all but left at the post
