Y., June 1. — Attendance at eight of its race tracks on Memorial Day totalled 283,512, an increase of 6.6 per cent over the holiday throngs of 1950, the Thoroughbred Racing Associations announced today. At New Yorks Belmont Park, 54,328 saw Ogden Phipps Busanda win the Suburban Handicap. Individual attendance increases ranged from 3.7 per cent at Bostons Suffolk Downs to 22.7 per cent at Delaware Park. Won driving; second and third the same. BOUNCING BOOTS raced evenly to the stretch, responded well when straightened up after bearing to the inside near the furlong post and outgamed EXCITABLE MARY. The latter, a sharp factor from the beginning, . was in close quarters during the drive, but had sufficient racing room and could not withstand the winner. EXCITABLE MARYS rider, who came out in the post parade with his blouse silks out of order, made a claim of foul against the winner, which was not allowed by the stewards. TACONY went to the front early, made the pace to the last eighth while engaging EXCITABLE MARY, then faltered. BORN TO WIN lacked early speed. BRIGHT STEEL was never dangerous and raced "wide during the last quarter mile. PLAY AT could not keep up. Overweight— Bright Steel, 1 pound. SIXTH RACE 3-4 MILE out of chute. OLD TOM assumed command at once, held a "clear lead when settled -in the stretch but was hard urged during the drive to withstand DIXIE FLYER. The latter, forwardiy placed from the outset, was sent to the outside for the stretch run and, closing fast, could not overtake the winner. COUNTESS MOLLY saved ground throughout,, remained on the inside for the drive and finished strongly, probably needing her race. BABY COMET was outrun.
