IIION IVORS STEEPLECHASE Despite the mediocre card presented by the Harlem management yesterday one of the larg ¬ est crowds of the week was present Outside of the second race there were no close finishes and the sport was rather tame throughout As there was nothing in the steeplechase to give Filon dOr an argument the Bespaas fencer was held at odds on and ran true to the betting Qneenship one of the starters was a newcomer at the game here and while she ran as if far from a good stiff race still she jumped cleanly and gave promise of being a good cross country animal when ready Captain Conover from the Pa Bradley stable set out to show the way loading by a fair margin np to the eighth jump where he began to tire and gave way to Dick Fnrber which had been running second to him Dick Fnrber was in the lead but a short time when Filon dOr came with a rush and nailed him a little after the tenth jump had been taken From there to the wire it was easy sailing for the son of Rayon dOr which won in the handiest fashion possible by threoqnar tes falpivjili nnd r r ttreint CaptajnjCan over was third twenty lengths away Dick Fnrber under punishment finished strongly in the stretch bnt had no chance to boat the winner winnerJack Jack Battlin after many vain attempts finally won a racebnt it was a tight fit he winning by the closest of margins It was in tbe second race a dash of five furlongs for twoyearolds Ishtar on hrr recent good performances was made a decided favorite Jack Battlin imme ¬ diately at Sag fall darted into the lead and opened a gap of two lengths holding his advan ¬ tage clear up to the last sixteenth where Ishtar which had always laid second began to close on him ItZeeemed as if she would get to him in the last hundred yards bnt ho just had enough left to paes under tbe wire a short head in front of her withtHoodwink third five lengths away Jack Battlin is not much enamored of a five furlongalroute as be has always quit in going that distancelin all the races he baa run here ¬ abouts About four and a half furlongs is his clip Miracle II showed speed for about a half mile The rest were never serious contenders contendersHeadwater Headwater was thought to be much the best in the sprint race the fourth race on the card but the beet he could do was to finish third Federal ridden by Gormley proving to be much the beat Money Muss and Headwater ran head and head at a hot pace for the first five furlongs where both began to tire and it was an easylmatter for Federal which bad al ways Jaid third to nail them in tbe last six teenth From there to the wire Federal kept gradually Imoving away from the spent duo passinglunder the wire two lengths in the lead Money Muss was second a head before Head ¬ water The latter fell out of it for a moment abont the eighth post but rallied and closed stoutly at the end He would have captured second place from Money Muss in another stride Theory ran a dull raco and seems to be in bad form She is probably in need of a long rest I IJulia Julia Junkin is a sweet filly these days and no more consistent youngster baa shown here abonta this year She was in a soft spot yester ¬ day and simply played with her field Off to a good start she dashed to the front at once and fiairly ran away from her field which she spreadeagled She won by five lengths pulled up The struggle for the second place was quite an exciting one Throstle just lasting long enough to get it by a neck from tbe faa closing Harry Wilson which in turn beat Pyrrho a head The lastnamed closed np some ground in the last quarter and was moving fast at the end Stnart Young which baa not started here in a long time showed early speed bnt could not carry it far Lapidna fell out of tho struggle in the first part of the race bnt finished at fairly good spaed and was well up at the end endCaptain Captain Hamm took took the first race of the day a dash of one mile for maidens The Cap ¬ tain was much the best of a poor lot and made hie field look cheap He easily led from start to finish crossing the line three lengths in front of El Fonse which beat Beauty Book one for second place Eirch Tree ran well for six furlongs and then died away It was a very poor lot outside of the first three threeHaviland Haviland long overdue took the finale in a big gallop going into tbe lead at the barriers rise and gradually increasing his advantage at every quarter post He won by five lengths pulled np from Illilouon which beat Tammany Chief one for eecond place Illilonon was bad ¬ ly cut off at the first turn but it hardly made any difference in the result Tremble showed speed for a half mile and About for six fur ¬ longs longsIt It was given out at the track yesterday that an amicable agreement had been made by the
