H. BOYLES GOOD SHOWING. WESTERN STEEPLECHASE JOCKEY HAS BEST WINNING PERCENTAGE FOR 1905. Nat Ray, the High-Salaried Eastern Rider, Leads in tho Number of Winners Ridden Patton Begins Well. Of the 8,011 races decided at the principal tracks of the United States and Canada in 1005, 299 were steeplechases and hurdle races for professional jockeys and thirty-nine were steeplechases and contests on the fiat for amateur riders, making a total of !!38 races. However, in a few of the steeplechases at some of the eastern tracks gentlemen riders rode In competition with the professionals. Nat Ray, under contract to Thomas H, Hitchcock, Jr., is the highest paid and generally regarded the best steeplechase jockey in America. He Is at the head of the list this year with, nineteen winning mounts out of fifty -one chances, but in point of percentage lie is topped three points, by Harvey Boyle, the western free lance. Boyle rode fifteen winners out of thirty-two chances and was behind the money in only eight races. Gaylor is third on the list with fifteen wins, E. Heider fourth with twelve, Rodrock next with eleven. Jimmy Owens and Pemberton are the only others who rode as many as ten winners. Jockey Patton, who never rode a jumper until the summer meeting at Latonia, scored seven wins out of nineteen mounts and equalled Nat Rays percentage of .37. Patton is a fearless rider and It is said of him that he uses excellent judgment in fencing. Eastern owners seeking pilots for their cross-country horses might with profit give this western boy a chance.
