THIS MAY BE LAST SEASON AT ASCOT PARK. Rumor that Los Angeles Jockey Club Will go to Venice The Gadfly Lowers a Record. Los Angeles, Cal.. January 23. There Is a persistent rumor affoat that this is to lie the last season ni Ascot Park. The Los Angeles Jockey Club, it is claimed, is considering the abandonment of the present plant and building a new track at Venice. It Is said that the people of Venice have expressed a desire for racing In that locality and have given the club assurance that there will be no interference such a9 has bobbed up here this season. In the fourth race at Ascot Park this afternoon The Gadfly reduced the track record for one mile and lifty yards to 1:4ft. The previous record was 1:44 J and was held jointly by Hans Wagner, Cin-cinnatus ,and Borghesi. After this performance J. J. McCafferty bid up The Oadfly from ,000 to ,400, but he was retained by his owner. Valencia, winner of the sixth race was bid up from ,200 by II. T. Griffin, but was retained. Fred Luzader, who lias been campaigning a stable here, ild off all his horses and will go to Memphis to assist "Bub" May in getting ready for the 1900 season. Luzader says the continued "boosting" has made matters unpleasant for many horsemen here, including himself.
