SMALLEST CROWD OF YEAR AT CITY PARK. Wishard Rides Handmore Well Exciting: Finishes Little George a Game Youngster. New Orleans, La., January 2.1. Today was an off day at City Park and with the counter attraction of Indies day at the opposition track the attendance was the lightest of the season. The racing, however, was spirited, most of the races furnishing keen contests and sinew straining finishes. Wlshards ride on Handmore in the third race was as line an exhibition, of horsemanship as has been seen at the meeting. Off poorly and Interfered with in the early stages, Wishard nursed Handmore along the backstretch and gradually worked his way up to a contending position on the far turn. Entering the homestretch, he came around Marlmbo and Ezra and when straightened out for the final run Wishard sat down and rode a determined finish. He timed his move to a nicety, and in the last couple of strides caught the tiring Marimlio and beat l"1 out a neck. Little George, winner of the two-year-old race, showed rare gameness. He won by a head from Arthur Rosenfiehl, after a furious drive, which lasted all through the last furlong. Julia and Chief Hayes had close calls in their races, the finishes being so close that the result ws in doubt until the official placings vvere displayed. When Thistle Do, heavily backed at odds-on to win the fifth race, finished last his backers were much put out over the horses showing. It developed that he cuffed himself several times in the race, and this accounted for his failure to run well. The horse has a couple of bad looking osselets and at the best is none too sound.
