BENNINGTON LOSES HIS DERBY PROSPECT. Jerry Wernberg Dies of Pneumonia at New Orleans Hugh McCarren Buys Glen Roy. New Orleans, La., January 2.1. Newton Bennington came here from New York Sunday morning to look over the string -he is racing at Crescent Park and arrange with trainer Bnrlew for their disposal. He left tonight for Florida, where lie will spend a month or six weeks before returning to New York. He spent part of the afternoon at City Park, and while there sold at private sale to H. McCarren, Jr.. the two-year-old winner -Glen Roy, by Glenheim Krudo. The price was reported to be ,200. While he was making this sale to McCarren, he received word from Crescent Park that his three-year-old colt, Jerry Wernberg, by Watercress Fleurette, had just died from pHnmoiiia;Though.iiw-a wlmieiv Jerry Wremberg was highly regarded as a three-year-old prospect. He started eight times last year, was second twice, third twice and unplaced four times, winning ,4.r,0. He has been sick for the past three weeks and trainer Bnrlew had so little hope for his early recovery that the colt was recently declared out of the Brooklyn Derby much to the nstonisiuuent of eastern turf folks. It is the general understanding that Mr. Bennington refused 0,000 for Jerry Wernlierg last spring.
