BACHELORS BUTTON WINS THE GOLD CUP. London, June 21. Tlie race for the Gold Cup was rnn at Ascot today and was won by Bachelor s Button ridden by Danny Maher, the American jockey, defeating Pretty Polly, the hot favorite, after a trying struggle for practically all of the distance, which was about two and one-half miles. Pretty Polly finished a length behind the winner and live lengths iu front of Achilles, which was third. Only two others started. The odds against Bachelor s Button were 7 to 1. The defeat of the popular mare tlie second of her career, was due almost entirely- tcNMahers splendid horsemanship. There were many Americans present and", of course, they profited handsomely through Mahers success. Bachelors Buttonls six years old and was bred in Ireland. He was old last year to his present owner, the South African millionaire, J. B. Joel.. The cup is a sweepstakes of 0 each, half forfeit, with 5,000 in cash added besides the golden trophy, which is valued at ,000. Of the added monev 0,000 goes to the winner, ,500 to the second and ,500 to the third. The starting post Is a half mile below the .stand, after passing which the competitors encircle the full circumference of the two-mile course. In consequence they must twice ascend the steep incline which leads to the winning post, so the race is a thorough test of stamina. The only American horse ever equal to the test was Foxhall, the winner in 1882.
