HAMBURG BELLES VICTORY. DEFEATS WHIMSICAL IN THRILLING CONTEST FOR THE BRIGHTON MILE. Flip Flap, Added for an Outside Chance, Much of a Factor Starter Dade Makes a Most Favorable. Debut. New York, July 11. At the papular old Brighton track, so convenient, compact and democratic, the Brighton Reach Racing Association inaugurated its summer meeting of twenty-two days under the most promising auspices. Ideally perfect weather conditions prevailed and 20,000 spectators packed the course when the celebrated Brighton Mile was run. This fixture lias been productive of sensational and thrilling struggles in the past, hut the climax of enthusiasm was readied during todays contest. The meeting of Hamburg Belle and Whimsical, both turf queens in their respective age division, and nearly Invincible in any class of performers now on the turf, was the magnet that attracted immense throngs of racing enthusiasts. "Whltey" l.angdon added Flip Flap, taking the otT chance that the two ehamplons might engage one another in a desperate sjeed supremacy duel from the outset and. tiring and exhausted In consequence, would let Ills lilly up at the end. Critics agree that Hamburg Belle -was well served by Whimsicals early slow pacemaklng tactics and that the race degenerated Into a Ave furlongs closing sprint in which loth Whimsical and Flip Flap were at a disadvantage. As it was, Hamburg Belle barely got home from her two younger opponents, one wliicli had followed under the extreme pressure and was coming again and the other running by her so fast that one stride past the finish she had a half length advantage. The other stake feature was the Distaff at five furlongs for two-year-old fillies exclusively. The consistent and game Clare Bussell carried top weight to a popular victory in this race with the heavily backed favorite Soprano nowhere. Irince Hamburg carried his 13." pounds like a feather In the opening race at six furlongs, showing a pronounced liking for tills track. Bryan was the medium of big backing by a select few and ran a good race. The steeplechase was the poorest one of the kind seen in a long time. The course was soggy and unsafe, due to recent rains. Caller was accorded persistent supiort at short odds and rewarded Ids backers In a dubious looking affair. Jimmy Lane received an indifferent looking ride. The wise contingent cashed on both Estimate and Artery. They showed a disposition to ignore the pretensions of both Flowaway and Kiiig Henry, which was not fair to form followers. A. B. Dade was well received at Brighton Beach today. The western starter made a successful professional debut on metropolitan tracks. Critics arid press alike unite in praising him for ids good work. The his; crowd cheered the newcomer vociferously for his splendid start in the Brighton Mile, in .which Ills patience and skill was well rewarded. Taking place near the sharp lirst turn, an equable break for all was of vital importance. Hamburg Belle cut up badly and had she been sent away in one of her whirling lunges one of two results would have been inevitable. The mare would have been left at the post or have Iieaten the barrier. Poor starts have on more than one occasion marred tills event in the past. Steeplechase jockeydom, however, is in a state of rebellion against the new starter, all duo to the unconventional manner in which lie proceeded to discipline these notorious manipulators. Bay was lined 0 and Homan, Stone and Kellelier 5 each for mlsbcnavior while at the post in todays jumping race. Jockey Walter Miller was taken with a sudden attack of Illness during the afternoon, vomiting freely just Iefore he mounted Hamburg Belle in the Brighton Mile, and under such depressing conditions, was called upon to give an incomparable display of horsemanship in order to achieve success with the great mare. Estimate, on which the western rider. Koerner. signalized his first victory on the metropolitan turf, was acquired by A. L. Aste through the selling route tmt of the fifth race. Browns lilly was entered to lie sold for ,100 and changed hands when Aste bid .C.0 for her. A Brighton Beach train, bound for New York ran Into a misplaced switch and left the track at Manhattan Terrace, blocking the elder and most available way to the racetrack for more than two hours. Many thousands of racegoers were held up and probably several hundreds abandoned the trip and returned home. Everybody was on time, however, to see the great mile event. John Boden, Jr., racing secretary of the Brighton Beach Association, is very ill and it is not thought that he will ever resume active work. Sheridan lark lias licen tilling the position acceptably for the past two seasons.
