ROUGH RIDING MARS RACING AT LAT0NIA. Funiculaires Defeat Proves Costly to Heavy Bettors Redgauntlet and Elastic Save the Day. Cincinnati, O., July 11. Some of the big speculators received a severe shock when Funlculalre and Lightning Conductor, both from T. I. Hayes stable and short priced choices were beaten in their respective races at 1 .a tun la today. Funlculalre, on figures appeared to outclass the others and any price against him seemed tempting. He trailed ids company to the stretch where he managed to save a lot of ground but succumbed to Colonel Jim Douglas, which came with a great rush in the final strides. The race was not truly run. Lady Esther should have won and would have done so but for the rough tactics indulged in by Preston, her rider, and lleffernan, on Nonie Lucille. This pair was racing out many lengths In the van from the start, and at the stretch entry they were running as a team with a good deal of daylight separating them from their nearest opponent. Preston, at this stage, so lleffernan claims, bore in, forcing Nonie Lucille to the inner rail. lleffernan retaliated by forcing Lady Esther wide. Preston using Ills whip on the other boy. The incident, of course, cost botli considerable" ground. Lady Esther, when fully straightened out again, eanie with great speed and when going fastest in the last tlfty yards of the journey was bumiied into by Colonel Jim Douglas and suffered another setback. After the race both of the offending riders were called Into the stand and lined 5 each light punishment. Todays card was one of the fair quality and the attendance large, but the racing was marred by poor starting and rough riding. Favorites and well backed horses, however, won a majority ot the races, so that the crowd did well in a betting way, prospering especially over the victories of Red-gauntlet and Elastic. It was decided today to institute one day drawings for bookmakers instead of the three-day cut in as heretofore and sixteen accepted positions in the big ring, the same number that went on at the last previous drawing. Hill and Johnson arrived from Lexington with twelve head of horses. Because of weakness in reducing, Treubel was excused from tilling his engagements today. In the fifth race Firalto Went through the fence with jockey Robinson; the boy was bruised badly, but not seriously hurt. C. C. McCafferty " bid up Elastic from to .,-100 and bought him. After tlie purchase he was notilied that the horse would be barred front starting until properly,, schooled- to the barrier. Trainer Will McDanlel will take William Corals horses to Saratoga. " It. C. Brien, owner of Kercheval, arrived today and" immediately shipped the horse to Nashville, where lie will be rested until fall. Chocolate Drop, which was badly cut down in her previous start, had to be destroyed today. Blood poisoning had set In., Because of Firaltos fractious acting her entry will in future not be accepted here. E. J. Gildcrsleeve lias arrived with several horses, including Amlicrita. Colonel Jack Price, formerly associate judge here, was among todays visitors. lie recently returned from a trip abroad. He is suffering from laryngitis and came here to consult medical experts. E. Anthony wired from Indianaiiolis a request for stalls for four horses which lie intends to ship here.
