JOHN CARROLL IS DEFEATED AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, X. Y., August 0. In spite of the hot weather a large crowd was In attendance at Fort Erie today. It was ladies day and this was largely responsible for the crowd. The card was an exceptionally good one and the finishes were In a majority of the races close and exciting. Only two favorites won however. The disappointment of the day was the defeat of John Carroll in the handicap, the feature of the card. Although assigned the top weight of 12! pounds, 3 to 5 was readily accepted by the supposedly wise ones. At the weights. Gold Enamel proved to be much the best. He ran In n contending position behind Scotch Plume until in the- last eighth when he moved up rapidly and caught the tiring Scotch Plume and outgamed her to the end. Peter Paul ran In improved form and finished third a head in front of John Carroll. Jockey Helgesen was suspended for six days for rough riding In the fifth race. He had the mount on Edward Wilder and in making the turn into the stretch carried Charlie Gilbert to the extreme outside. W. J. Young today purchased from W. Walker the three-year-old hay filly Request, by Rensselaer Emma Pickwick, for 1906.sh00. Shewon the sixth race In her new owners Interest. Secretary W. O. Parmer returned today from Nashville where he made arrangements to ship his vearlings, along with those of E. S. Gardner, to Saratoga to be sold. E. Whelan is the latest to get the Saratoga fever. He shipped Cohmosa and Ossineke to that track today.
