MAY GIVE JOHN M. P. AN ARGUMENT. In the course of its comment on John M. P.s victory in the steeplechase stake at Sheepshead Bay Saturday the New York Herald says: "Naturally, comparisons were made between John 51. P. and Good and Plenty, and men of good judgment said that they did not think Mr. Hitchcocks grand horse could compare with John M. The speed of the imported gelding is superior to that of anything ever shown by Good and Plenty, whose forte, however, is gameness and ability to follow a strong pace. He was the best steeplechaser in this country until John M. P. was brought over. "There is no doubt that in all future handicaps John M. P. will be required to concede lumps of weight to his competitors, but there arc at least half a dozen weight for age events, with penalties, which would make his weight about 170 pounds, and he would in such races be meeting his competitors On much better terms than in handicaps. "Good and Plenty has not raced since he won the Grand National Steeplechase at Belmont Park, carrying 170 pounds, and defeating Grandpa, 150 pounds; Herculoid, 140 pounds, and four others. At Saratoga Herculoid, which is only four years old, ran the best race run since Good and Plentys Grand National, and beat a high class field. Later he again won, conceding much weight to Phantom and ethers. "Herculoid is regarded as John M. P.s most dangerous competitor at present, because Good and Plenty has been more or less under suspicion of unsoundness, and If he races again this year Mr. Hitchcock will be surprised. This being the case, horsemen are asking each other. Where are we to find horses capable of giving John M. P. a good race 3 "
