OLD STONE WINS FEATURE. MILDRENE MAKES IT TWO PURSES FOR G0LD-BLATT AT DOUGLAS PARK. Toboggan Runs a- Sparkling Race Mamie O. Breaks a Leg and Is Destroyed Talent Fares Better in-Betting. Louisville, Ky., September 4. There was, "naturally, a falling off in the attendance at Douglas Park after the big holiday patronage of yesterday, but the crowd was one of fair proportions and on betting bent. The twenty-two books had about all the business they could comfortably attend to. Speculators had better luck In picking the winners than on the opening day. They .landed heavily on Toboggan, Old Stone and Mlldrene, all fancied at favorite prices, while The Only Way, second choice In the last race, was also well backed. Rothgeb and Lacene were the successful outsiders. Mose Goldblatt captured the feature race with Old Stone and picked up the two-year-old selling race with Mlldrene, his recent purchase. The liberal price about Mlldrene was largely due to the fact that the filly appeared a trifle lame In front while in the paddock. The lameness, however, was not of a serious nature and she showed no traces of It when she came back to the scales after the finish. Toboggans performance in the second race was a sparkling effort. He was almost left at the post and seemed hopelessly out of it while going down the backstretch, but came with great speed and, picking up his opponents one by one, , gradually forged Into the lead through the stretch and won with plenty in reserve. His good exhibition was heartily applauded. The first run: up of the meeting came after the third race when Lacene was bid up 00 over her entered price of a like amount by Frank Doss. She was retained by her owners. In retaliation Denny Brothers claimed Nuns Veiling out of tho race, paying J. S. Hawkins 00 for the filly. Shortly after the start for the second race there was a bad mix-up. Mamie O. was seen to stagger and stop short. Investigation disclosed that tho filly had sustained a compound fracture of one of her hind legs. She was destroyed. Because of his fractious acting at the post yesterday John Doyle will In future be barred from starting here. The horses comprising the string of C. Hak will be shipped tomorrow to Churchill Downs from Latonla and rested for the meeting at that track. There is a scarcity of good riders here, Aubuchon aud D. Boland seem to have It cn the others for the present. The former piloted three winners during the day. If no more rain falls the track should be fast tomorrow.
