TWO-YEAR-OLDS OF 1906 OF HIGH CLASS. Annually some turf scribe puts forth the statement that the two-year-olds of the year current arc inferior to those of the preceding year and pessimistic " persons gloomily agree that such is the case. Already it has btcn asserted in a New York publication that the two-year-olds of this year are of inferior grade, advancing the old stock argument that they beat each other in turn too often to be anything but bad. The truth is there never was a more fallacious argument. A considerable number of high class racehorses will win in turn from each other just as certainly as a considerable number of humble selling platers will alternate in victory and defeat. On the basis of their performances, there is good reason to conclude we have a number of high class two-year-olds, comparing favorably with the conceded good ones of recent years. The only thing that makes one racehorse better than another is his ability to run faster. Speed is the all important factor. In that respect the crack two-year-olds of this year make a remarkably good showing. Last year it was thought that Mohawk II. was only second to Burgomaster and many deemed him fully as good as the splendid son of Hamburg. Yet the best race that Mohawk II. put up whh when he won the nojiefnl Stakes at three-quarters lm l:13g, with 130 pounds up. This year Peter Pan took up the same big weight and won the Hopeful in over a second faster time, 1:12. According to this showing he could have lost Mohawk II. in a race had he chanced to be of the same age. Yet Peter Pan is only one of our good two-year-olds and not the best, Salvidere apparently holding that distinction at present. Below is a table showing the best performances of fifteen leading two-year-olds of 1904, 1905 and the present year. Comparisons such as are made here, are not conclusive, but in respect to ability to run fast under high weight and stay well, the taule, shows that our good ones of this year arc decidedly of high class. Such blazing stars of the track as Artful and Sysonby appear but seldom and it may be that Salvidere is not as good as Burgomaster, was, but on the whole it seems the -youngsters of .1905 were inferior to those of 1906. If such, fine performers as Yankee Consul-and, George, C, Bennett had not died prematurely last year a different conclusion might be In order. 1904. Horses, Distance and Tracks. Wt. Time.
