HOWLAND RETURNS FROM EUROPE. New York, September 2G. S. S. Howland, who has just returned from a trip abroad, where he saw the .principal steeplechase courses-in. England,, Erauce. and Austria, says that the courses in this country will stand favorable . comparison with the best in any of those countries so far as the fences and general character of the courses are concerned. As a rule the turf is much better, but the. fences are no stiffer nor better constructed than ours are. "At Auteuil," says Mr. Howland, "they have a formid able looking stone wall, with no dirt or turf on top. It is, however, less than four feet high, but must be cleared to prevent accident. Aside from this wall there is no vast difference in what I saw there and what I have been accustomed to in this country. I did not see much steeplechasiug, but found all American horsemen and riders who have cast their lots with the foreigners holding their own and prospering. There are many American riders in France aud all are doing nicely."
