DEATH OF A FAMOUS BROODMARE. From New York comes a report that the Saufords Hurrlcana Stock farm near Amsterdam, N. Y., has lost its most famous broodmare through the. death of La Tosca. She was the dam of the former champion sprinter Chuctuuunda aud of the sturdy cup horse Caughuawaga. La Tosca was a beautiful chestnut, by St. Blaise Toucques aud the three-year-old queen of the turf in 1891, when she won sixteen races out of twenty-one starts. As a two-year-old she won the June Stakes and Belles Stakes at. Sheepshead .Bay, Select Stakes at Monmouth Park and Fashion Stakes at Morris Park. Among her trophies when a three-yearrold were the Swift Stakes, Dolphin Stakes, Speed Stakes, Reapers Stakes and Siren Stakes at Sheepshead Bay; Clinton Stakes and Oceanview Handicap at Gravesend, and American Hotel Stakes at Saratoga.. Having been foaled so recently as 1888 her time of usefulness was by no means over, so her death may be justly called untimely.
