CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE CHAMPAGNE STAKES. Like several other stakes now annually run at Belmont Park, the Champagne Stakes originated at the famous old "saddle bags" track, Jerome Park, now a reservoir in the New York water system. When lacing was abandoned there the stake was transferred to Morris Park and run there from 1800 to 1001, Inclusive. Grinstead, famous afterwards as Lucky Baldwins premier sire, Hyder All, Vltglnius, Macduff, Leo, Dew Drop, Connemara, Azra, Ramapo, Ben Brush, The Friar, Plaudit, Kilmarnock, Garry nermann, Endurance by Right, Stalwart, Olseau and Perverse, all brilliant racers, were among its long succession of winners.
