NOTES OF THE TURF. Fred Burlew and Frank ONeill have jointly made sixty-eight nominations to the City Park Stakes. Before Athlete won the Roslyn Handicap his owner had about made up his mind to put the colt in the sale list. It Is different now. St. Amant, which last year gave twenty-four pounds and a sound beating to Polymelus, broke down while running in the Cambridgeshire and has been retired to the stud. Holscher is expected to be a formidable candidate for the Washington Cup at two miles and a quarter, and the Maximum Stakes at three miles, and it seems that a Brighton Cup winner might land both events. Francis Trevelyan Is credited with having purchased a farm in the bluegrass country near Charlottesville, Va. It is within five miles of Ellerslic Stud and will in part be devoted to breeding thoroughbreds. It is reported that Okenlte will not be raced at Benuings, but will be sent forthwith into winter quarters at Garnett, S. C, for a long rest before being prepared for a vigorous campaign next spring. Smiling Tom will probably be the Belmont representative In the Grand Consolation. Henry Avis, In charge of ten horses from the breeding farm of William Mulkey, has arrived at New Orleans. It was reported that Mulkey nnd Avis had retired from racing, hut the report was evidently erroneous. The Mulkey farm always sends good horses to the races and any that Avis sends to the post are to be viewed respectfully.
