RUBRIC TAKES THE OAKLAND FEATURE. Favorites Fail Their Backers, but Racing Is Good Burleigh and Gypsy King Are Sold. Oakland, Cal.. December 1. An unclouded sky and still atmosphere brought a grateful change from yesterday and an attractive card, -which included ibe ?1,0m Cinderella Handicap at a mile, brought 10.000 visitors to Kmeryville this afternoon. Again were the transportation facilities wholly inadequate lo handle the big throng, several- thousand Oak-landers being compelled to walk to the track. Gaylords inconsistent Rubric captured the feature race after being juggled and pulled up at the start, nosiug out the favorite. Sir Edward. Thousands of dollars were lost on the latter. Two favorites, Gemmell and , .Mansard, won with ridiculous case. The other public choices were lost in the shuffle. Several horsemen have coveted Gemmell. Harry .Stover only yesterday offered his owner ,500 for him. Harry Mack second with Melttuh, bid him up to ,05, but Iolk retained the Rubicon youngster. Close observers predicted that the betting on Orchan foreshadowed his defeat in the fifth race. .Saudy rode the horse and rode him badlv. He was immeasurably best. H. T. Gritlin came up today from Los Angeles. He has fifteen horses in training at Emeryville and eleven at Ascot Park and had the misfortune to lose two yearlings by death recently. Jack Joyners apprentice rider Horner, who has been engaged to ride Gritlins horses, will leave Washington for Oakland at the close of the Ben-nings meeting.. S. C. Hildreth has disposed of Burleigh and Gypsv lung to "Michigan" Smith at private sale. The latter turned them immediately over to Harrv Robinson, who will handle them on a six-months lease. A big plunge developed on the eastern mare Ethel Day in the last race, but It was fruitless.
