TWO GREAT MARES DOING FARM WORK. Lexington, Ky., December 1. Two great mares have recently been put to menial labor, after years of honor in the stud, by United States Senator J. W. Bailey, of Texas. They are Rose, the dam of Wild Thyme and War Mantle, the dam of Lady Schorr. Roses last foal is Belle of the South. War Mantle has not had a foal since she dropped Don John, now five years old. The Texas statesman came by these thoroughbred mares through the purchase of the Iroquois Stud and farm from the heirs of the late Captain James B. Clay and there was no sentiment causing him to pension them, as is usual with breeders. Rose is twenty-two years old and War Mantle is nineteen and neither is likely to have another foal.
