BIG DAY FOR H.P; WHITNEY. ; i HIS HORSES WIN SPLENDID PRIZES WHILE HE SAILS FOR ENGLAND. , a i Dinna Ken Triumphs in the Lawrence Reali- J zation and Stamina Scores an Impressive Victory in the Double Event. New York, .luly !. The Coney Island Jockey , Clults summer meeting of seventeen days closed this afternoon with the Lawrence Realization Stakes anil the seconil half or the lonhle Event as the features of a card that attracted fully 20,nu0 people to the course. The Lawrence Realization lost some of its interest through the withdrawal of Peter Pan and the ahsence or Colin and Masque detracted much from the Douhle Kvent. A big force of men" were at work during the forenoon to get the track into condition for the first race, hut the heavy precipitation or the night lief ore had left the footing so wet and deceptive that Mr. Keene decided to scratch all other original entrants except Zambesi and entrust his fortune in the two-year-old fixtures to Besom, tiie added starter. It turned out to he a real Whitney day. Dinna Ken and Stamina, lioth ridden hy jockey Mountain, scored a douhle for Harry Payne Whitney in the two stakes. Dinna Ken defeated Frank Jill, Salvi-dcre and Zambesi with comparative ease for the Lawrence Realization, one of the greatest three-yearrold specials. Stamina earned the distinction of being the lirst filly to win the second half of the Double Kvent when she defeated her opponents with sr.ch amazing case that, expert, ventured the opinion that the mighty Colin might have received his first set hack had he started. The withdrawal of Peter Pan made the Realization a comparatively open alTair and it encouraged speculation. While Frank Gill was always favorite, though on an ascending scale, Dinna Ken received the heaviest support, his odds falling from as high as fours to 11 to 5 at post time under tremendous backing. Salvidere and Zambesi, the only other starters, were more or less ignored by the players. Mountain rode the winner patiently and skilfully through the long and trying one mile and live-eighths journey and moved up simultaneously with the favorite in a final sprint to the finish. Mc-Ginnls colt had no mishaps, excepting that the rapidly drying out track may have bothered him. The public jumped to the conclusion that .Mr. Keene knew what he was about when he relied on Besom and sent hint out singly to cope with the formidable opposition in the Double Kvent and the speculators accordingly gave him heavy support. Stamina quickly tool: the run out of P.esont, which attended her closely during the early running, then withstood Cliapultepecs menacing stretch challenge and finally won off easing up. It was a wonderful achievement both from a time standpoint and the manner or its accomplishment. Harry Payne Whitney was not present to see these victories, lint the news was wnt to nlm on board the Kaiser Willielm II. by wireless telegraphy. Mr. Whitney sailed during the forenoon for England and will not return until late in the fall. .Millers superior work was responsible for Scallops success in the opening race. There was a pronounced tendency on the part of speculators to play all around the Newcastle Stables entry and he went up in the betting. The steeplechase was a spectacle without incident that called for few thrills. Ring indications were unfavorable to Dick Shaw and the forewarned spectators were considerably exercised over Rogans unsatisfactory efforts on the second choice. Golden West won a lucky race in the fifth, and he was bid up from ,000 to ,000 by M. Kraus in retaliation for a recent "boosting" of one of his horses by Itrown. The latter bought the filly in for a advance. Miss Crawford, the third choice, hut the best-backed horse in the closing race on the grass, displayed considerable, improvement over her preceding effort and won really, with much to spare. The favorites, Ostrich and Tony Roncro, were seemingly unable to raise a respectable gallop. Ceder-strome, In accordance with precedent, was disqualified for boring and interfering with the winner, notwithstanding that Hie others were beaten off for second place. It Is reported that James R. Keene s Grolna Green came out or the last race in had condition and that he was virtually broken down. Montgomery came out between the third and fourth races and worked a mile and an eighth trial In 1:501, without being even fully extended. F. R. Hitchcocks Tangle appeared shortly afterwards and went the same distance in one second slower time. The racing scene sliifts to Brighton Reach tomorrow ror twenty-two days.
