MONTREAL STAKES TO CLOSE. The inaugural Montreal meeting was one of such unqualified success as to at once assure the new racing organization a favorable position in the esteem of horsemen and a profitable and popular future. Some doubt as to the attainment of this success affected stake entries in the case of flic spring meeting, but no such element is likely to intervene as an obstacle in the way of future meetings. The Montreal Jockey Club has opened a list of stakes to be run at its next meeting, which begins Saturday, August 31. Considering the difficulties owners are now laboring under and the timely date of this meeting, it will be surprising if the owners of horses now being raced at Latonia, Windsor and Kenilwortb do not give these stakes noteworthy patronage. With racing effaced from the map in Illinois, Missouri and Ohio, it is very much to their own interest to foster all new racing enterprises to the end that opportunities for profitable employment of their horses may be increased. The stakes now offered are the Saint James Handicap at a mile and an eighth, Occau Gateway Stakes at three-quarters of a mile, Champ dc Mars Stakes at a mile, Primrose Stakes and St. Lawrence Stakes at five-eighths of a mile each and the Canadian Grand National Steeplechase over the full course of about two and a half miles. They close for entries Saturday, July 27.
