SARATOGA ATTENDANCE IS NORMAL. Racing at Yonkers Has Detracted Little From the Patronage at the Spa. Saratoga, N. Y., August 1.". The Saratoga situation today is pretty close to that of the Saratoga of old. The town is not so "tight," and the race track, of course, will share in the benefits. It is bard even now to realize that there Is racing at another point, for as a well-known trainer put it tills morning, "No one that counts is away." The sport here has been and will continue of too high a grade to justify any desertions. William Garth says lie will not start T. S. Slar-tln through the Saratoga steeplechase field unless the going is softened by rain. T. S. Slartin is in condition to race just now, but he has a couple of ossclets, and Oarth is afraid ho might break down if lie tried to negotiate the local course. "What do you think of that?" said Frank Farrell, when Vails beat Dr. Gardner in a drive foij the Delaware Handicap. "The horse runs the best race he has shown in weeks, and my own boy, by putting up a desperately strong finish, beats him home. That is the fortune of racing, however, and I am glad that the boy rode the winner If the Doelor could not win." There was a rumor current that Farrell had released Beckman, but it was without foundation. The boy is riding in first-class form just now, and Is a lightweight much in demand. P.eckman will go back to New York a far better rider than when he left, lie is getting a number of first-class mounts here, ami it is the old story of good horses making good riders. It gives them confidence and arouses an element of ambition, without which there is very little chance of improvement in their horsemanship. John McDowell, a veteran newspaper man of Saratoga, and well known to turfmen for a third of a century, died at his home here Tuesday. Tom .McDowell is one of the arrivals. He has been in Kentucky looking over his yearlings. His stable was shipped "here more than a weekJgoam I" he promised his friends that he would give them a chance to win a bet on one of his string before the week is out. He reports Colonel Clay as much improved in condition and likely to recover. Andy Blnkeley has some good youngsters in his stable that have been sick, but, are getting ready to carry the Emery colors with credit. Tuesday lilakeley showed for the first time in public Slarengo the colt that is so closely related to Uichard Crokers Derby winner, Orby. Slarengos dam, Slarechal Neil, and Hhoda P.., the dam of Orby, are full sisters. The showing of the colt was far from being a test of his merit. He looked and ran green. The race can be put down simply as an education for him.
