GATES SENDS AGENT TO NEWMARKET. A London cablegram says that an agent of John W. Gates of New York was at Newmarket Tuesday inspecting premises suitable for a residence and mining quarters for a racing stable. One of the establishments was Heath House, an imposing mansion near the center of the town, for many years occupied by the Duchess of Marlborough formerly Mrs. Ilamersley of New York, previous to her marriage to the late Lord Beresford. Another estate examined was Hamilton House, formerly oc-cupied by the late Sir James Millar. The Newmarket renting agent who showed the properties refused to acknowledge that he been approached on behalf of Mr. Gates, hut he admits that the principal in the mutter Is a well known American. It seems that two or three Americans are making inquiries at present about Newmarket estates. It is locally understood that the Jockey Club, which owns the training grounds at Newmarket is willing to grant Mr. Gates an owners license, hut - it is doubtful whether- it will give him a trainers license. His trainer is "Boots" Durnell.
