BURT G. LEWIS ST. LAWRENCE STAKES Son of Sombrero Easily Wins the Feature at Montreal Bad Day for Favorites. Montreal, Que., September 5. George S. Davis Sombrero colt Hurt G. Lewis added to his list of victories the St. Lawrence Stakes, the feature race of the program offered at Hlue Rennets this afternoon, in this race he met the besL youngsters here and gave them a sound beating, winning in a canter by three lengths after making all bis own pace. In the early running the speedy Manhciiner furnished keen contention and raced head and head with the winner until making the turn into, the homestretch, when he tired ami in the final furlong Hurt G. Lewis drew away at his leisure. Uncle Toby was second a head in front of Louis Roederer. the latter coming from behind and finishing with a great stretch run. Tenancy by Courtesy, the favorite, ran poorly and was never dangerous at any stage of the trip. The deep, sticky going probably was responsible for bis poor showing. Dethorpe was added, but cut little figure in the running, the finish finding him last hut one. Foun players found picking winners a dillicult task, Hob .Murphy, winner of the steeplechase being the only successful favorite. Even his victory was a lucky one, for, had Rallycastle not made a bad blunder at the ninth jump, he would certainly have won. As it was he forced Ilueston to ride his hardest to get Hob Murphy to last long enough to win by a scant length. First Mason ran like a rejuvenated horse in the second race, which he won in little better than n canter artcr leading the others all the way. Ik-was ridden by J. Lee. The strong backing of Kxcitement enabled the backers of First Mason to get a liberal price against the horse. First Masons previous race with Rio Grande and Ormondes Right was good enough to warrant Ids beating bis opponents of today and his owner, R. H. Stellle, profited by the horses victory. The ollicers and crew of the warship Hremen were guests of the club at Hlue Honuets this afternoon and they attended in a body. Jockey J. Lee and his manager, Hen Jacobs, left for Kentucky tonight and will rest up until the opening of the Lexington meeting. liefore leaving Fort F.rie, Kdward Trotter purchased the horse Willis Green of J. McClernand. The price paid was said to be ,000. Todd Cella. thought that Dethorpe had a royal chance in the going and added her to the stake. She broke slowly and had no chance after the start.
