COLTS PRODUCE EOPt COLIN. f i MR. KEENES CHAMPION PLAYS WITH HIS FIELD AT BRIGHTON. a Nothing Near the Great Commando Colt at 1 l the Finish H. P. Whitneys Stamina l Wins Fillies Half of Rich Stake. Now York, September 30. Cool, clear weather prevailed at Brighton Beach today. The twelve- , liour heavy downpour of Saturday and Sunday left , Hie track muddy, lint with an unexpectedly hard liottom wliich made fast time possible The racing throughout was remarkable in that race-goers showed their appreciation of the magnificent card offered for the opening day at the October week meeting at tin old -seaside course by turning out in great numbers to sw; tin; sport and were rewarded by seeing some of the best racing that has been , produced this season. , There were many withdrawals, the races of secondary importance being most affected in that respect. The lifty-eiglit absentees out or a total of ninety-live original entrants were not seriosuly missed, however. The two brilliant, stake affairs, the 0,000 Brighton Produce Stakes, brought out the llower of die two-year-old colts and lillies, including, the unbeaten and unapproachable Colin, now universally acclaimed the champion of champions of his age on the American turf, and the great Whitney lillv. Stamina, which came into her own so convincingly today. Both of these juvenile turf stars triumphed in their respective divisions of the rich lixture. It was mere play for Colin to lead such good ones as Fair Plav and Koyal Tourist the six furlongs of this race in the wonderful time of 1:1-". The astounding speed and ease with which lie won excited the admiration and wonder of the beholders. Matt Byrnes, who developed Salvator, and .7. W. nosers, who trained Artful, declared that tlte gigantic Commando youngster was easily superior to any of his juvenile predecessors. J. It. ,Keene - remarked: ---"The only one which . licats Colin is his little stable companion, a calico pony which is always his leader in preliminary contests before races." This is literally true. The kingly Colin complacently allows his diminutive crony" to precede at top speed throught the stretch. Of a total entry list of thirty-one horses for the first race of the day. twenty-four were scratched, leaving seven to go to the post. Sewell was made the favorite, but bad nothing to do with the finish, the winner turning ui in Don Enrique, with Chief Hayes narrowly heading his former stableinate. Jack Atkin, out for second money. I.aby Wolf went well and may score before the meeting is over. With Sheriff Williams, Bunnell and Garrett scratched, the steeplechase fell easy prey to Navajo with the second choice Guardian II., defeating the Vavorite Iaprika. for second money. The latters Itorformance was not up to his best form by any means. Seven good lillies contested their part of the Produce Stakes. The added starter Bouquet was made the favorite and well backed, but the good daughter of Endurance by Kight, Stamina, added the rich event to II. P. Whitneys stable winnings, coming with a game rush through the stretch and holding Bouquet safe in a well contested finish. Meggs Hill ran an excellent race and was a close up third, far in front of Julia Iowel. The latter seemed unfavorably affected I iv the going and fell away steadily in the stretch drive. The filly foals outnumbered the colt foals to such an extent that Stamina took considerably more by her success than Colin did in the colts and geldings race. For the coltss and geldings part of the Produce Stakes. Colin was an overwhelming favorite. It was hardly more than an exercise canter for him. The great colt went out in front at once and won all the wav under stiff restraint, pulling up five lengths before Fair Play. The latter had a desperate set-to with Itoyal Tourist for second money :md only prevailed because he had the best footing on the outside of Itoyal Tourist. The latter is a line colt, and likely to develop into a crack three-year-old. It. P. Carmans more than useful colt, Arimo, defeated such good ones as Martin Boyle, Ampedo. Old Honesty. Mainchance. Temaeeo, Kight Koyal and Beacon" Light with astonishing ease at a mile and an eighth in the fifth race. He won oft by himself with Martin Doyle. Ampedo, Old Honesty and Mninchance but heads apart behind hint. Tin; joint favorites. Bight Koyal and Beacon 1ight, finished last and cut a sorry figure. Old Brancas. favored by fortune and the going, had a close call in winning from Lane Allen in the last rare of the day. It was only a matter of a head between them at the end of the mile and a quarter trip, with Lancastrian a good third close up. The favorite, Killiecrankie. ran poorly, and will do better on a fast track, as also will another inconspicuous one. Tipping. Beginning today the official time for starting the first race will be 2:15 p. m. James Butler and Matt J. Winn were visitors at Brighton track this afternoon. Colin at 1 to -1 was tiie only successful favorite to win during the day. There was a tendency to play all around Ihe Keene colt, tiiere being a doubt as to bis ability 1o race well in the mud, hence the very liberal Iirice. Mr. Keene again remarked on it. W. B. Jennings left Saturday night for the west, lie left Julia Iowel and Miss Norfolk in charge of Tom Welsh. Both were left to go in the Brighton Produce Stakes, and will now be retired to John Ilynes farm near Stamford, Conn., for the winter. A new batch of yearlings intended to be raced in fall weight events have been received from Castleton Stud by James Howe. John Condon, of Chicago, was a visitor at Graves-end Saturday. A bookmaker named Kilborn in the back line, went overboard for 00 on flood Luck Saturday. He had to pav out on the colt, but only had half that amount with which to settle. The difference was made good today. Miller is finding it a hard matter just now to get below 10.! pounds. His contract with T. II. Williams for next year calls for 105.
