BALLOT AND 11YE BOTH MIL. TWO OVERWHELMING FAVORITES ARE BEATEN AT BRIGHTON BEACH. Salvidere Takes. Measure of the Keene Crack While Two Beat the Bowery Champion The Circumstance a Record. New York. October 1. A racing incident probably without precedent exasperated the public at BMgh-lon Beach today. It was the defeat of Rye at 2 to 5, and Ballot at 1 to .!, in succession. The combined memory of the talent could not recall a similar failure of two favorites of such formidable class and price in successive races. Both were backed as saving certainties, and the ring amassed a vast sum by the double failure. There was a great crowd out to see the racing. There is no question of Brightons popularity with New Yorkers. The track was at its best and the air comfortable. Two favorites won near the end, but the linancial slaughter of the day was horrible. .Master .uiller rode two winners well Salvidere and Master Robert. His effort on Kye deserved the liarsh criticism it received. A six furlongs sprint brought sixteen maiden two-year-olds to the post for the first race, for which Orcagna and Lotus Brandt were joint favorites. The winner turned up in Jane Swift, which got off well and simply ran away from Orcagna In the stretch. Lotus Iiraudt managed to finish fourth and is a disappointment. The lirst steeplechase of the year for three-year-olds exclusively, was the second item on the card, and an interesting affair to admirers of the illegitimate branch of racing. It was an easy race for the well backed Ambush, which led throughout by a wide margin and may be one of the jumping stars of next year. Judge Post went well, but was easily held safe by the winner. The race was marred by King Castle, Sandy Creeker and AVaterspeed falling. A stunning surprise was indicted on the numerous followers of the Iiowery champion, Kye. when third to AVes and St. Valentine proved the best be could do in the third race. Wes. it was rumored, bad some stable backing, but St. Valentine was friendless at long odds.- .With- Miller In the saddle, Kye seemed a. racing certainty. However, it was a fast run race and the really surprising feature was not Kyes detj-at. lut the sudden rejuvenescence of Wes and St. Valentine. Old Phil Finch was coining like a streak at the end and may hand out a surprise himself presently. Miller rode badly on Kye. If the surprise attending the downfall of Kye was great, it was nothing in comparison with that aroused when Salvidere decisively overthrew Ballot in the Cup Preliminary. ISallot had, it seemed, conclusively demonstrated his complete mastery of Salvidere in the Second Special at Gravesend last Saturday when he gave him five pounds and a beating at the same distance as that of todays race. Kut after he had led for a mile Salvidere challenged with such speed and resolution that Ballot linally tired and Salvidere won off by himself. The result complicates the prospects of the greater race for the Brighton Cup next Saturday and the field will probably be much larger than it would have been had "Ballot won. Todays was a very fast run race, only Goodrichs 2:30 at Washington Park and Charles Edwards l!:i;03 at Brighton Beach excelling it from a time standpoint. The tabled history of the Cup Preliminary is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt Jockey. Val. Time. l!Mi:s llernii 4 120 Puller ,905 2:32J P.lOi Africander ...4 121 ONeill 2.S05 2:34 1905 Cairngorm 3 115 AY. Davis... 2,075 2:34 1900 Proper ! 120 L. Williams. 2,855 2::::! llMTfSalvIdere :: 111 AV. .Miller .. 3.3S5 2:30!! The fifth race called for the two-year-olds to traverse a mile route, and Master Robert, getting away well, easily demonstrated his ability to stay tile distance, and won easily by five good lengths. Results might have been different had Number One and Martha Jane not got off so badly as to appear to have no chance. They finished second and third after closing a tremendous amount of ground. Security got off Hying in the sixtli race, and won all the way.,- Aino closed a big gap in the last quarter, and in n .fast finish got up in time to head Pantoulle out for second money. Pautoutle only defeated Alcncon ly a head, and Cloistercss was lapped on the latter. Tom MeGratli was rightfully the favorite, but after running in third place to the stretch, he quit suddenly and ran a race difficult of explanation. The favorite, St. Ilario, took the last race of the day without trouble, with Milford second and the long shot, Goshen Chief, third. Sempro lint np a good performance hero and if off well might have given the winner trouble. AV. AV. Darden was asked to put a price on Live AVIre after his clever victory a day or two ago. He fixed the price at ,500 and, while there was no deal made, it is possible that he will be in another stable before the end of the season.
