ENGLISH SECOND MONEY IS SMALL. It has been learned and can be staled with positive authority that the place moneys which fell to the Duke of Portland iu that memorable year of 1SS9 was a little less than ,000. This looks- absurdly small, but place earnings do not count up so fast in England as here, and besides the duke had a stable of race winners. New York Telegraph. As a matter of fact the second and third money earned by the Duke of Portlands stable in 1SS9 was 7,71S,. made up of winnings as follows: Donovan, 70; Ayrshire, 00; Johnny Morgan, 85r Meianion, .28; The Turcoplione, ,335.. In a great many of the English events of the first class no second money is offered and hardly any of them provide for third prizes.
