THE DUKE OF PORTLANDS STABLE WON 71,754 IN 1889. The unexampled success, from a monetary point of view, so far as this country is concerned, of James K. Keenes stable, quite naturally led to comparisons with the greatest sums won by the leading turfmen of F.ngland and Prance, it has become well known that the Duke of Portlands horses won in 1SS! more money than those belonging to any other English owner before or since and. reduced to American dollars, the gross amount won has been stated to have been $:5S,947. Taking this to be correct. Daily Racing Form has made comparison on that basis, but a careful investigation shows the real total won by the Duke of Portlands horses in 1SS! was 71,754. The discrepancy is mainly in the fact that the Racing Calendar does not take second and third money into account, giving only first money won. In 1SS9 the Duke of Portland campaigned a stable of nine horses, composed of two four-year-olds, three three-year-olds and four two-year-olds, it was this small string that won for him the enormous sum named, and their names, breeding, races and amount won by each are here given, the money being computed at the rate of .85 to the pound and covering everything won: Horse. His only defeat was when he ran second to Enthusiast in the Two Thousand. Except Isinglass, he was the greatest money winner of English turf history and a very great race horse. Ayrshire was the Derby winner of 1SSS. In 1S89 he started but three times, but to such purpose that lie won two of the noted ten thousand pounders and ran third to Gold and Antilles for the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. His two successes were in the Keinpton Park Royal Stakes of 0,000 at Kempton Park and Eclipse Stakes of 5,500 at Sundown Park. The two-year-old tilly Semolina won fourteen of her fifteen races, her only defeat being for the 5,000 Portland Plate at Leicester. Her winnings included the Prince of AVales Stakes at Goodwood, Ascor Biennial, Acorn Stnkes at Epsom, May Plate at AVindsor, Kibury Home Kred at Bibury, Exnlng. Plate and First Spring and Koscawan Stakes at Newmarket. She won the One Thousand of the following year. Then there was Memoir, destined to win the Oaks and St. Lcger- of the following year and rank as one of the great marcs of England. She did not mature early, but won her last three races, taking the Bradford Plate at Leicester and the Zetland Stakes and the Prendergast Stakes at Newmarket in a row. Of the minor contributors The Turcophone won a ,500 plate at the Newmarket Craven meeting and this is what has heretofore been credited to him. But lie ran second In the Newmarket Stakes, of which the second money was ,000. and this has not been given credit for in computing the Duke, of Portlands stable winnings. Johnny Morgan won the rich Princess of AVales Handicap at Kempton Park, but won something in addition with two seconds and a third. Donovan. Ayrshire and Melanion also won place money that is to be accredited. It thus conies about that despite Colins substantial contribution iu the Produce Stakes Mr. Keene has yet a bit farther to go before he eclipses the Duke of Portlands winning record of 1889. To be exact In dollars, he must win ,107 more.
