THE SALVI DE RE-BALLOT DUEL. New York, October 2. The Ballot-Salvidere race was a sensational struggle. Ballot leading oft as nsual, with Salvidere pressing closely, persistently and relentlessly. Maddens instructions to Miller were: "Race all the way until you beat him or are beaten." The intelligent and vigorous riding tactics which were tried on this occasion on Salvidere for the first time this season, worked a marvelous change in the race of the two horses. Salvidere did not loiter and dilly dally in the rear as. has been his wont in the past, but went right after his licet and free-running opponent and wore him down in the first mile. Salvidere ranged alongside Ballot beginning the fourth quarter and uV thrilling struggle for supremacy ensued on the far turn. Salvideres head began to show in front from there on, and he drew away as he pleased and ended with a cantering victory in the extraordinary time of 2:30. The champion two-year-old of last season finally came into his own. The great cup horse of the year, If not of the decade, stands revealed in the victor. Salvidere was handicapped, if not seriously, by a severe cut on his right hind leg, which opened and bled after the race, iiis right hind heel was also raw and bleeding slightly from contact with the track. The astounding ease and decisiveness with which Salvidere wrested the three-year-old crown from the but recently acclaimed champion. Ballot, came as a stunning surprise to all but close observers of the atrocious manner in which Brussel handled him In the Second Special at Graveseud.
