THE SQUI11E ALL THE WAY. WINS GRAND CONSOLATION STAKES LIKE A GOOD ONE. Right Royals Easy Success My Grace Takes the Steeplechase Ivanhoe Defeats Killiecrankie. Washington, D. C. November 2". The card offered for the second Saturday of the meeting was as g km! as it is possible to make tip from the horses here. Three stake features to he decided during the afternoon brought the largest crowd of the meeting to the track. Kain fell again almost all afternoon and the air was raw and chilly, The track looked more like a country road than a race course. It was a streak of mud and water. Kight withdrawals from the lirst race still left twelve to go and the erratic mud horse, Graziallo. was made favorite. St. Joseph, which had acted like a crazy horse in the paddock, was the first to get away, but soon quit and finished last. Po-quessing, the second choice, followed the leaders closely and, after a humping match when turning into the stretch, won easily. Nancy probably suffered the most from the jam in the stretch, hut finished gamely and outstayed Killochan for second place. Graziallo loomed up menacingly in the stretch, hut tired and was a close-up fourth at the end. Diver, the Clear-the-Way gelding from the Kerr stable, was the only absentee in the Hunters Champion. Diver has raced at this track nearly every year of his long turf career and the crowd would have liked to see him tinder colors in the race. Tellfare was the, public choice to win the crosscountry featiir, blt r.r.tr- rushing into- thp lead by slipping as lie landed at the jump near the finish of the lirst time around. He was re--tnouuted by Mr. OBrien, but was so far back that he barely got up to beat Flying Machine for third place, although his rider did not seem to persevere with him. My Grace caught Warrenton tiring near the finish and came away very easily at the end. Mr. A. Henry Jiigginson, of Boston, who races a number of steeplechasers under the iioiii de plume of "Mr. Chetland," started his bay horse John T. Morgan for the first time in the race, hut he pecked at a jump while going the second lime around and unseated Wilson. Tlie tabulated history of the Hunters Champion Steeplechase is as follows: Year. Wilson, Jr.s Falcada was the one to win and accordingly backed the Woolsthorpe chestnut at a short price. Notter took the winner to the front at the rise of the barrier and, before he had gone an eighth, had established a long lead which the favorite could not reduce, although making a game challenge on the far turn. Smoker, the added starter, was third. The condensed history of the Grand Consolation Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Kight Royal, which won his last two starts, was the natural favorite, and the black horse ran accordingly. Bcauclerc, with Xotter up, received the support of that jockeys following, but could not do hotter than third. The winner of the Vestal Stakes ran a good race, but was not able to keep pace, with the winner. The tabulated history of the Benning Special is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. Val. McDaniel 705 2:45 Jockey McDaniel won the fifth race, which was for maidens at special weights, partly because lm was the best jockey having a mount in the race, hut gave his mount a superior ride even for him. Tenakoe, which, was disqualified "in his last start, led right up to the finish and would have won with a better ride. Wonder Worker made his first start in this race and In finishing third showed promise of becoming a possible good one. Ivanhoe won the mixed race, which closed the program, after being ridden leisurely throughout by Notter. Killiecrankie finished fast and under a stronger ride might have caught the favorite before Notter managed to accelerate Ivanhoes stride. .Ocean Spray kept nearest company to the winner for the first mile and lasted long enough to save third place three lengths in front of Dele Strome, which closed a considerable gap in the last half. The bad acting of St. Joseph caused the stewards to have the track veterinary examine him and the matter is now under investigation. Trainer Joe Marrone ofTered to have the horse examined by other veteriiiaries at his own expense, and claims lie does not know anything that should cause the horse to act as he did. There was no backing" for St. Joseph here.
