ENGAGEMENTS OF JOCKEYS ABROAD. "Regarding jockeys retainers for next year, it may be stated that Maher continues to ride "for Lord Derby, and so far has no second retainer, and he would only accept one in the event of Lord Rosc-bery wanting him. Maher does not propose to visit America this winter, but intends to hunt till January and then go to Switzerland to join J. II. Martin and his wife, who, as usual, will winter at Davos Platz. Martin has concluded his engagement in Austria and is open to accept a retainer in this country. Another jockey who wants a retainer is Arthur Templemau, whose apprentice-, ship expires next April. "Templeman sails for India, where he has a lucrative engagement for the winter, but he will lie back In March". Escott has likewise been secured for the winter campaign in India. Willie Griggs goes at the end of the racing season. Auber, the property of Mr. A. A. Apcar, who has given Griggs his retainer, leaves England for the land of his adoption also. Auber will bo in charge of Ernest Day, of Royston, who brought Bill of Portland and Carbine from Australia, took Ormonde to California, and has made seven voyages with valuable race horses to India. Iliggs engagements next year will be the same as this. Mr. J. C. Sullivan has first claim, the Beckliampton Stable second, and Lord Rosebery third." London Sportsman.
