New Origans?, La., December 24. The hurdle race at a mile and a quarter over live jumps was Intended as the days feature, hut resulted in a huge failure, six of the eleven starters coming to grief at some stage of the race. The race was won by Itank Holiday, an extreme outsider in the betting. Hob Murphy, also at a long price, taking second place from Aules. Tins trio of placed horses were neglected in favor of Magic and Coal Mack Lady. Magic showed poor form as si hurdler and came to grief at the second obstacle. Lindale and Itaca-tiara, at the same time becoming entagled, fell heavily. At the next fence, Peter Becker and Fete Vinegar fell, and Modredlaw unseated his rider. The entire Held showed lack of training at hurdling and put up a bal contest. Outsiders managed to get away with the majority of the purses, much to the regret of the large crowd in attendance. The fourth race, at one mile, went to Coltness. Dainty r.ello, which linished second, made a sparkling effort to down the Watkins candidate, but was not good enough. This was Dainty Belles first defeat in six starts. That it takes more than an ordinary rider at times to consummate successfully well intended coups, was demonstrated in the closing race when Deni-gre suffered defeat by the narrowest possible margin. Denigre had been primed for a "killing" and much money was bet on him in various places throughout the country. That iie lost was solely thejfault .of O. Baker, his rider, who became rattled and threw away the race. Glamor was thoroughly beaten in the 1.1st furlong, but managed to come again under hard nrgiug and got up iV the last stride-to win- out. Jockeys Kotter and Skirvin enlivened matters considerably in the third race by engaging in a whip duel. Notter slashed away at Skirvin several times, lint did no serious damage; The judges, however, assessed him a fine of 0. Skirvin tried to renew the battle after dismounting and was fined 0. ltebel Queen showed a sudden return to good form and beat Ketchemike in the third race. Rustle was best, but a poor send-off caused her to finish no better than third. The Cella following made amends for Rustles defeat when Clara Huron won the fifth race in the last few strides of a spirited drive with Alegra. The latter was smartly supported by the knowing ones and would have won in better hands than Ilufnagel. T. Polk is negotiating for the purchase of Potheen. Polk is desirous of obtaining the horse for stud duty at his ranch near San Antonio, Texas. .Tockey .T. Carter, who rode Florentine in the opening race, was suspended for six days by starter Cassidy for disobedience at the post. The poor race Marbles ran last Saturday, when she failed to finish among the placed horses, when in with an ordinary band., was explained today by the announcement that she has been ailing ever since and at times her fever has reached 105. Veterinarian Keogh, who has been looking after her, Js of the opinion that she will pull through, but will be unfit for racing purposes for some time. The money stringency is still apparent, and many of the layers who have booked big losings recently are worrying about how to replenish their working capital. Their money is slill in banks and they find it difficult to draw on it at short notice. Unless there is a noticeable change in their favor within ?he next few days, some of the most prominent will Jiave to take a forced vacation.
