GALAS FALL BROUGHT MOURNING. Before Fred Burlew shipped" his yearlings to New Orleans, the filly Gala, which started at New Orleans Wednesday, was considered the best of the band destined for winter racing. She invariably out-broke and out-ran her stable mates in their morning trials last fall. The friends of Burlew in New York knew of the filly, and when Burlew sent the tip to them they backed her for a good thing. There was many a New Year resolution made in the afternoon after the result of the race became known never to back another two year-old first time out. When they learned that the filly fell at the start Burlew was forgiven, and the filly restored to her former place la their estimation.
