WELL KNOWN IN CHICAGO. W. P. Maxwell, the veteran trainer, who Is successfully training the horses owned and raced at Santa Anita Park by Roy T. Offutt, the bookmaker. is one of the oldest horsemen now actively engaged on the tart in this country. He Invented a barrier which is now used by nearly all of the starters winking on American tracks, and It is still practically the same contrivance as he introdneed mauv years ago. Others have tried to improve it, and also have brought out other mechanical devices, but none of them has superseded the Maxwell harrier. He has at different times officiated in various capacities during race meetings ln all parts of the country. He superintended the building of the Rol y. Ind.. track, and racing was In progress there two weeks after the ground was broken. Mr. Maxwell is about eighty years of age, but is at active as the ordinary man of half his age.
