1 I SANTA ANITA RACING AT ITS BEST. Sugarmaid Runs Disappointingly — Hereafter Makes a New Track Record. Los Angeles. Cal.. January 3. — A card that was not much of an improvement over that of yesterday drew out the largest Friday attendance of the meeting. Several surprises were sprung during the afternoon, the most notable being Sngarmaids defeat in the fourth race by Lisaro and Waterbury. Sugarmaid probalily found the distance too far, lint would hardly have won at a shorter distance today for Waterbnry showed a clean pair of heels to her throughout, but had to yield to Lisaros sensational finish. The racing is now at its best. Most all of the easterners who Intended to spend the winter here liave already arrived. Among the latest arrivals are John P. Mclnerney and Dave M Cuddy. Iioth from Chicago. Iu the first race Hereafter made a new track record for this fast track in running the five and one-half furlongs in 1 :t 52. after leading all the way. The De Annan gelding was an overwhelming favorite in the betting. Haltou. a recent winner here, ran in second place all the way, but swerved badly in the stretch and just saved second place from Progress, followed by Scarfell only a head behind when they passed the judges. The feelings of the backers of favorites was at high pitch when I.ee Harrison II. led his opiionents in the second race to the last stride and then failed to finish within the money. He tired suddenly allowing Wistaria. Orcen Coods and Mansard to pass him in the last sixteenth. El Cazador. Dazzle. Rubinon and Sir Russell were all equally favored in the third race. They finished as naimd with the exception of Sir Russell, which was iu a forward position to the stretch and then tired. Lisaro equalled the track record for seven furlongs in the fourth race, winning by a neck from Waterbury. Sugarmaid carried the public money, but a distant third was the best the recent ,000 acquisition of the Fleur de Lis Stable could do. Old Settler ran well for a half and is probably a better horse at shutter distances.
