f RACING STATISTICS OF 1907 I In essentials the racing of 1907 was satisfactory to lovers of the turf and one of groat prosperity to the organizations conducting meetings. It Is quite ! probable tliat the great New York tracks returned i more money tban in any year of tUeir history j despite the cutting off of the revenue formerly dc- J rived from betting privileges. Going from one ex- l treme of the country ,to the other, the patronage J awarded the California tracks was also something , to evoke wonder. The Latonia, Louisville and Lex- 1 Ington meetings were all that could be expected. Under a peaceful division of racing dates the Nevr ] Orleans tracks were both money makers. The outlying meetings of the Texas circuit, Seattle, Denver, Butte, Spokane and other points prospered. The attempt to conduct a race meeting as an adjunct to the Jamestown Exposition was a failure, as such , ventures almost invariably are. The Canadian meet- , ings at Toronto, Montreal, Fort Erie, Windsor and , Hamilton met the expectations of their officials , and promoters. The Buffalo meeting at Kenilworth , Park bad a measure of success not attained there in previous years. The one really unfortunate feature of the year was the passage of a law by the legislature of the historic racing state of Tennessee that coin- . polled the abandonment of the sport at Memphis and ! Nashville, a strange thing for Andrew Jacksons ■state to do, and one that the shade of that stern, 1 cant-hating soldier and turfman must have viewed wiih loathing and contempt. The enactment of the Amis law in Arkansas had the similar effect of abolishing racing at Hot Springs, but this was not j so severely felt, or so much deplored, as was the removal of Tennessee from the racing map. As is always the case, the Coney Island Jockey Club gave more money in stakes and purses than any other racing organization, its contribution for the year being 19,735, or the extremely captivating , daily average of 0,057. In all thirty leading organizations in the United States and Canada gave in this way ,375,554. In contrast thirty-eight organizations gave ,420,381 in 1900, and in 1905 thirty-three gave ,001,557. The races run in 1905 [ were 8.011, in 1906 they numbered 7,057, while in 19« 7 there was a diminution to 7,104. Besides the authentic amounts set forth in the table, minor racing bodies, those composing the Texas circuit, , the Spokane and other mountain district meetings and state and county fairs, gave an aggregate that probably brought owners fully 00,000 more. So that in all the thoroughbreds earned for their owners considerably over five and a half million dollars In 1907. In 1907 it was ten states and Canada. Of these, the slate of New York was productive of nearly half of the graud aggregate and the state of California second on the list. The record of production of these eleven districts financially were as follows: Racing Races Money States. Days. Run. Distributed. Nashville, Hot Springs and Rockingham from the list of racing points had the effect of reducing the aggregate number of races run in the United States and ada in 1907 to 0,252, as compared with 0.840 in 1900. But for the coming in of Montreal the reduction would have been even greater. The decline in money won was not in proportion, the falling off only amounting to 8,802. Montreals 6,275, the new 5,000 Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes and other contributory items served to keep the aggregate of money run for close up to the crop of the previous year. In one feature, consistent running, as iudi ated by percentage of winning first choices. 1907 did not compare favorably with its immediate preceding year. In 1906 the percentage was forty-one, which is approximately normal. In the year just passed it was but thirty-nine. This Is a decided falling off. but does not necessarily imply an unhealthy condition. It is worth noting that at all of the winter tracks, except Oakland, the percent-i age of winning first choices was high, forty-four per cent, at City Bark, forty-three and one-half at New Orleans Fair Grounds, forty-two at Ascot Park, and fifty-four at Santa Anita. Considering the heavy track at Oakland last winter and most of the present winter, its percentage of thirty-eight is also very good. Of the big summer tracks Brighton Beach made the best showing, with fifty per Cent. at its July meeting. All things considered, the worst record of the year was the twenty-five per rent, seorcd at the Latonia sn miner meeting. Stu-- dents of this form of mathematics will find the vari-5 ations l etween the records of the different tracks , interesting and, possibly, valuable.
