RIDING RECORDS OF THE JOCKEYS. W. Miller, as in 1906. was first among the riders on the flat in number of winning mounts, bnt fell short of his great record of riding 388 winners in 1906. In respect to percentage of winning mounts he was at least consistent, scoring twenty-eight in each of the two years. That he is a very successful rider is a matter of record, and that record carries with it the certainty that he excels in some of the qualities that go to make a high-class jockey, but ihere are not a few who question his judgment of pace and deem him lacking in other particulars adhtTEt to the truly great artist in the saddle. Be that as it may. Miller shares with T. Burns the tame of having for two successive years led the .1o -keys of the country, and. if increasing weight dooc not curtail his opportunities, may do so again in IMS. The table of leaders since and including 1!Mi.", nails as follows: Year. Jockeys. Mts. 1st. 2d. 3d. ITnp. P.C. MM 1 erkins 762 192 177 129 264 .25 is: w C. Reiff 822 292 102 86 342 .33 1S07 U. The colored rider. J. Lee. was second to Miller by virtue of a period of striking success at New urleans last winter an«l at Louisville and Latonia in tlie spring and early summer. Riding the winners ot the entire card of six races at Latonia was one of his feats and a record. Later In the year lie seemed to grow timid and fell off in horsemanship and success. R. M. Daniel finished third in the list. "Puddin" " is not favored by the writers attending races, and seldom is awarded praise for good riding, but he M-em to get there just the same, and has made quite a creditable record in the past two years with 102 winning mounts In 1906 and 177 In 1907. The ii ing lightweight. E. Dugan. practically unheard of in 1900, achieved great distinction, and in his first year of real opportunity piloted 154 winners. Dugan Is held to be Millers most formidable competitor and probable successor in leadership. He is a l oy of grerft promise and well equipped in thone particulars in which Miller seems deficient, riding at long distances with marked judgment as well as being able to hurry away in sprints as alertly as any rider of the day. Nicol rode skillfully in 1! 07. but fell off in per-tt-fiiajji- and found it difficult to keep dowu to ridiug weight. Riding in but 481 races in 1907 against 930 in 1906. tells its own story In that respect. M. Preston advanced in number of wins and per rentage. Notter came into such prominence that he is now justly esteemed one of the foremost jockeys of the day, and. having been engaged to ride for tlie Keene stable, has a great opportunity before him in 1908. Mountain did some brilliant riding at intervals, bnt is not consistent in his saddle work. C. Koerner. Moreland. C. H. Shilling. Garner. W. Knapp and Lloyd all did well in 1907, and are excellent riders. Of the old-timers John Bull-man showed that he retains his well-known skill by a percentage of twenty-three, but has gone out of fashion and did not have many mounts. Lightweights Delaby, D. McCarthy. Goldstein. C. Ross. G. Burns, R. Davis, Sumter and several other youngsters gave indications of becoming the riding stars of a lew years hence. Boyle and Archibald, rode the winners of fifteen steeplechases in 1907 and tied for first place in number of winning mounts. Boyle was unknown to the list, of 1906 and Archibald was second to Nat Ray that year. MeCIure came next with fourteen winners and H. Stone, Mclnerncy and S. McClain tied for fourth place with thirteen each. Nat Ray had to take a back seat with eleven winners, but has no superior in his calling in this country. T. Rae. Dupee. P. Hagan and M. Hender son all had a fair measure of success. In all 133 jockeys rode in the steeplechases. Of these 6S rode winners and 65 were so unlucky or unskillful as to have no winning mounts.
