; POOLROOM WILL TEST THE AMIS LAW. Memphis. Tenn., January 7.— Following the death last week of state senator Amis, of Rison, Arkan-sas. who was vigorous in his efforts to kill betting on horso racing ]It the state, the poolrooms at Hopetichl, Ark., directly across the river from Memphis. o|iened today. Odds were displayed and bets wen accepted. Telegraphic communication with the New Orleans track was had. The proprietors, who are former employes of 0. C. Bennett and F. P. Coleman, said they were not violating any law inasmuch as bets were sent outside ilie state. It is thought that the same test will be made in Arkansas as was made by bookmakers in Missouri and other states to evade the law by sending bets outside of the state by phone or telegraph.
