| 1 , , l IRON HORSE OF ENGLAND. In writing of sturdy performers of the English, tnrf iu days gone by. Vigilant of the Sportsman, lias this of Vulcan, which ran two "races in one day on two occasions : "A French coup for the Lincolnshire Handicap was bui" partially realized in 1871. when, carrying the chocolate, red sleeves and black cap of M. H. Delamnrre, Veranda, three years old, seventy-eight pounds, divided with Mr. Winchesters Vulcan, aged, nineiy-two pounds. That was a memorable tiiiish, and the race is worthy of special mention by reason of what was afterwards accomplished by the old horse, for before the year was out he proved himself to be one of tb" best horses in training, and became known as the "iron horse." He would seem to have 1*een unlucky not to have garnered all instead of half the spoils, and "Mr. Lombard" — which nom de course then veiled the identity of Mr. . J. Lefevre — must have been inibued with the same opinion, for he bought liim forthwith, and it was in the blue, white and red hoops that the son of Thunderbolt and Alarum, with Fred Webb on bis back and carrying ten pounds extra, won the Nottingham Spring Handicap two d:iys later, the Lincoln and Liverpool meetings having clashed in that year. "Ceorge Fordham first made acquaintance with the old horse at the Newmarket Craven meeting, and marked the occasion by scoring a double on hiin on the Wednesday, winning first a plate of BjSJBJt and then a subscription plate over the T. Y. ft. course. At the First Spring meeting the same combination was to the fore in a plate of 08 ami again iu an Experimental Handicap, iu whicii he gave eighteen pounds to Wheat Ear."
