MARIAN CASEY WINS AGAIN. DEFEATS HEATHER SCOTT IN A CLOSELY CONTESTED FINISH. Johnny Lyons Takes the Feature Race at Oakland— Cloyne Successful in His First Start — Stewards Vigilant. Oakland. Cal.. January 7. — C.ood horses were engaged in tlie third, fourth and sixth races at Oakland today, and form was well maintained. With the exception of the juvenile features, the reverse was the case in the running of the remainder of the card, which was devoted to nondescripts. The trio of winning favorites were respectively Marian Casey. Johnny Lyons and Cloyne. It took a superior class racer to finish in front in each instance, and the brilliant and form fill racing furnished by this half of the card made amends for ilie upsets that monopolised the inferior division. The San Mateo Handicap at one mile was decided over a very slow track. It took Johnny Lyons, the victor, one minute and forty-four seconds to run the distance. The racing nowadays is never wholly free from suspicious angles, and the stewards are kept busy probing into this and that reversal. M. J. Daly became conspicuous for one which developed in the closing affair of the day, won by Cloyne. because of the running of his filly. Sophomore. In her preceding start Dalys good three-year old had forced Marian Casey out to the last ounce to beat her a head. Tod.iv. at a very short price and backed heavKf; and persistently by the unsuspecting public. Sophomore was uuable to raise a respectable gallop with similar going prevailing on both occasions. Walter Miller somewhat rehabilitated himself with the race-going public by good horsemanship this afternoon. He began auspiciously for his adherens by seining with Silver Wedding in the opening race and followed this up by good work in landing the two favorites. Many horsemen who witnessed tlie two-year-old On Parole impressively win todays race for infant racers, predi cted a brilliant career tor Jack Keeues youngster. The opinion was general that he was the fastest colt in getting away from the post seen in a long time. The alleged jockey. J. Butler, was fined 5 by the stewards for carrying Taunt wide with Huerfano on the stretch turn in the fifth race.
