March "0. — Tlio closing two we* ks of the Crescent City lackey Clubs winter meeting was inaugurated today tit the Fair Grounds under anything lmt favorable auspices. The attendance was small, speculation light and tile program aliout the poorest of the season. Next week the New Louisiana Juckey Club will give a weeks racing, which will wind up tie- season here. The mediocre class of horses co-.it sting made surprises inevitable, and no on • was seriously shocked when General Marchniont. in the opening race, which was backed with supreme confidence by his owner and following, led a fair hand of youngsters to the finish. In the succeeding race, the choices were again bowled over. Agnes Wood, at a long price, taking the purse from Gowanga. another neglected one. Masquerade, the favorite in the third race, fin-Jshed sUchtty in advanc • of Karls Court, on which C. K. Ellison had planned a killing. Tlie feature, if such it could be called, went to P. Dunnes Ketchemike, an overwhelming favorite, in hollow style. The fifth race was thought to he l etween Gild and Carew, neither of which managed to be inside the money, the purse going to Lord Dixon, which showed suddenly improved form and outstayed Lemon Girl in tlie dosing strides. La Fayette, the favorite in the sixth race, had to si a nd a hard drive through the final furlong to get home in advance of .Maelstrom. In the closing race Gilpin led all the way and 3 beat Coldway. J. Lees ride ou Doubt in this race was sharply criticized, lie had him under restraint for three-quarters, and in the final drive he was in n pocket which effect ively disposed of his chances to finish in the money. The report that Edward Corrigan had secured control of the City Park track by the purchase of tlie block of stock held by S. F. Heaslip. was denied by the latter this afternoon. Mr. Heaslip stated that his stock holdings had not been transferred to Mr. Corrigan as reported, and that he was still president of tlie New Orleans Jockey Club. Fnrrber than this Mr. Heaslip would not commit himself. Those supposed to be close to the powers that control the racing here aver that the transfer of the stock to Mr. Corrigan is not far off. as the latter is said to hold an option on it and its transfer will place Mr. Corrigan in complete control. Tlie application for licenses to train and ride on Kentucky tracks must lie made to the secretary of the Racing Commission at Lexington before April IS.
