SECOND WEEK AT WASHINGTON BEGINS. Giles Runs Surprising Race and Defeats Berkeley — McCarthy Rides Four Winneri. Washington, D. C. March SO.— The Washington lackey Club began its second weeks racing this afternoon with a very interesting card. The meeting is improving every day. and further Improv nient may he looked for tomorrow. The nuiiiltcr of starters in most of the races today was larger than usual and all were well balanced. The afternoon was cloudy and 111- track slow, but tiiis did not deter the crowd from enjoying itself in every way. No feature was on the program today, but all the races were well contested, and th two-year-old races are becoming more attractive every day, as the youngsters are now showing som • form. Jockey McCarthy was the star performer in th* saddle this afternoon by winning four of the six races, and the Canadian rider already has a big following. John E. Madden uncovered a good colt in the win-M ;• of the third race. High Range, a well-made black colt that hail to be much the best to win. as lie was off on the outside and did not get through until well in the stretch, where he rapidly overtook the lead is and won impressively. The Canadian colt. Wat rbridge. which was extensively backed the other day and as confidently supported this afteinivin. won the fourth race from the early leaders. Cartwheel and Grandpa. Th" victory of Giles in the handicap was a big surprise. Berkeley, the second choice, was second, and Smoker, the favorite, third. Berkeley was poorly ridden and so was Smoker, but the latt r did not appear to be in good form today. Holscher. the favorite in tlie closing race, was caught in the barrier when starter Cassidy sprung it and was practically left nt the post. He clos d a big gap and was easily best. Jockey T. Burns was set down for five days by the starter for misbehavior at the post on Lady Is-al el in the first race.
