All three of these races furnished good contests: The utecplechase resulted in a driving finish between Steve Lane and Woodside Jn which the former was first home by a neck. In the Royal Canadian Handicap the field was made up of probably the best j i i i i j 1 . : , i sprinters that ever went to the post at Ham- I ilton. The race proved a stirring contest and t the winner, Ethon. was forced to hang up a new t track record to beat out King Cobalt. The latter t showed a great flight of speed for a half mile and I succumbed only after a gruelling drive in which he t displayed more courage than usual. Etbon showed t a fine performance, coming from behind In the stretch run and finishing like a good race horse, t The time for todays race was otic-fifth of a second faster than the previous mark. c Favorites won two of the races. Solon Shingle and t Throckmorton being the successful choices. A ma- a jority of the races furnished exciting contests, the finishes in three of .them being of the driving order. 1 The defeat of King Cobalt was the. biggest upset of the afternoon. Thev were caught in the aet by the Plnkertons. who 1 took the badges up and reported the matter to Sec- i re tan- Loudon. Pierce, who Is pacing a couple of jumpers here, was asked to remove his horses from j tlie grounds. Jockev Dave Xieol got in from Louisville iuis i afternoon, but failed to arrive Ju .time to fulfill the i engagements that had been made for It I in today. Arlan. was destroyed by trainer i Tom Kodrock a few days ago. The horse injured himself iu his last start and there was but slight chance of getting, him to the post again. i M. B. Dooley, agent for It. F, Carman, purchased vesterdav of J. W. Pangle the three-year-old. Cr.uk Shot. The price paid was 00. Harry Price, representative of the Man-land Jockey : Club, arrived from Baltimore this morning. He notified horsemen not to ship to PImlleo until a few days before the meeting there begins, as the stalls I at the track are tilled just at present with trotters. Steeplechase jockey Archibald, who had the mount on Manzano. struck one of the poles which mark the i course with his knee, and came out of the race will-an ugly looking gash on his leg.
