WHY GATES BETS AGAINST GOV. HUGHES. New York. October 1. John Gates and his agents are betting on the defeat of Governor Hughes where-over they can. Mr. Gates said yesterday that he is confident Governor Hughes will npt be re-elected and he Is willing to stake some money on the result of the election. "New York is too big for Hughes," said Mr. Gates. This state takes the measure of a man like that quick and get-, all it wants or him in a hurry. New York is a state of liberal-minded people aud they do" not care to have a man in otllee who will seek to tie them down to his narrow ideas of what is the ricrht thing. That is why Im against Huches, and I find enough sentiment all over the state to make it worth my while risking some money on my opinion."
