SMALL RIDER IN TRIUMPH. MIDGET HARRINGTON GUIDES EM AND EM TO VICTORY AMID HEARTY APPLAUSE. Twilight Queen Defeats Desirous in the Feature Race at Oakland Day Devoted to Selling Platers. San Francisco. Cal.. December 2S. "Doughnuts" Harrington was the roal thing in a jockey way at Oakland today. The midget created a sensation by riding Km and Em to victory in the fifth race at odds of .0 to 1. Harrington weighs lust. lifty-iie pounds, and is probably the- smallest as well as the youngest jockey in the country. His unexpected Kiddle exploit was greetwl -with almost hysterical applause by the 5,000 spectators present. A big field of eleven unruly horses of moderate caliber were engaged, and the extraordinary ooulidenee and ability with which tin; youngster extricated his mount from a threatened mixup at the start and drove her through close quarters on the first turn evoked exclamations of .surprise on every hand. His rapid overhauling of the leaders on the baekstretch and subsequent lead to the end was; watched with breathless interest, particularly by the feminine portion of the crowd. Aside from this pleasing incident the racing was of the stereotyped kind and devoid of special feature. The card was chiefly for selling platers. The one exception, a condition dash at six furlongs, was contested by horses of good class and developed the best turf spectacle of the afternoon, in which Twilight Queen, the heavily backed favorite, got up and headed Desirous in the last stride after a seemingly hopeless stern chase, lly spreadeagling such opiosi-tion for over live furlongs. Desirous displayed a glimpse or her brilliant two-year-old form and her Inability to last the journey was due to the excessive early use made of her by jockey Buxton. Creation, which was hopelessly outpaced for live furlongs, was only heaten two heads in a sensational stretch sprint. The linish was so close that the winner was in doubt until the names went up. To cashier Falk of the Sheepshead Bay clnb the judges placing meant something out of the ordinary, lor rfinultaneously witli the display of Twilights 1 number he grabbed the bankroll and darted through the crowd in an effort to get away with it. Johnny. Glenn, the bookmaker, gave chase and the money was recovered. The culprit, who is said to hail from U Detroit, is no connection of Benny Falk. Jf Another apprentice jockey in Cotton landed a mount during the afternoon, Deneen in the opener and a favorite to boot, being the medium of ids successful saddle effort. Gargantua and Twilight Queen were the other winning favorites on the program. Comparatively good, the track was still cuppy and deceptive and it was considered remarkable that form was maintained so well under the circumstances.
