FUTURITY STAKES OF NEXT YEAR. The Futurity of 1909 had an original nomination of 951 mares, of which six proved to be ineligible, leaving tbe true first, entry one of 9-10 mares. What number of these proved to be barren, slipped foals or had dead foals or twins, lias not been given out by the Couey Island Jockey Club, so the present condition of the big event cannot be stated with positive accuracy, but it can be closely approximated. Void nominations front the causes named are usually in the neighborhood of two-fifths of tltc whole, so to deduct 3S0 from the original 940 will probably prove close to the real record when it is disclosed by the club. This would leave 500 eligible up to the November declarations. These amounted in all to 470. So there are now about ninety colts and fillies eligible and subiect to further depletion at the next declaration, which takes place July 15. 1909. The November declarations were unusually heavy, because .Messrs. Haggin, Keene, Belmont. Whitney and other breeders had sent many of their eligibles abroad for sale or for racing. But one and all of these men have taken the precaution to preserve some of their nominations. Many other owners declared out at tbe small first declaration fee because or the squally racing times and it may be reasonably assumed that those left in represent little iu the wav of taking chances, but are, so far as could Iw determined, the picked ones of each mans nominations. This conduces to good racing and the total i now left in is sufficient to provide a Held fully up I to the traditions of the two-year-old Derby of I America. , . I Of the declarations already made. 394 were at t 0 I each: 100 at 0 each and two at. 0 each, so there I is already an accumulation of 1908.sh,OSO towards the ultimate value of the big race.
