TO RACE AT NEW ORLEANS. MEETING SCHEDULED FOR SUBURBAN PARK TO BEGIN SATURDAY. JANUARY 10. Joseph A. Murphy to Preside and Arthur McKnight To Do the Starting Judco Murphys i Important Statement, f New Orleans. La.. December lit. Quite unexpectedly n full-licdged plan to conduct a race meeting here has developed. It is not to le over either of tiie two big tracks, but over tbe Suburban Iark track in the neighboring Jefferson Parish. It is a veU considered and planned affair with all details worked out. It is to be conducted under auspices that will command the attention and confidence of all interested in the affairs of the turf. Joseph A. Murphy has consented to act as presiding judge and manager of the meeting and Arthur McKuight is to do the starting. The meeting Is to open Saturday. January 10. J. B. Kcspcss has taken an active interest in organizing the venture and is one of its leading backers. Tbe word has been quietly passed to owners in winter quarters to prepare their horses for sudden action and the big array of owners nnd horses how at San Antonio. Texas, can be translated to New Orleans in twenty-four hours. With them and- tho reinforcement sure to gather speedily, the meeting will start oft with nn abundance of horses. When the Locke bill was being debated in tho state seuate before its enactment into law. its most nrdent and inlluential supporters agreed that under its provisions individual betting was not in any way interfered with or prohibited. In this is the keynote to the betting at Suburban Park. It will be individual betting there in the style used on New York tracks last summer and which has been held to be legal in several decisions rendered by New York courts. It is not proposed to race in contravention of tho Locke law. but under its tolerance of individual betting. San Antonio Tex.. December 29. Discussing the proposed meeting to be conducted at Suburban Iark. Joseph A. Murphy, who will be the general manager, stated today: "1 have a copy of the Locke law siiid intend to !race strictly to its provisions. I i i-hall ask the county officers lo point out the line fllmt is the straight one and we will hew to it r vtrictly. We will make no attempt to evade or test the constitutionality of the law. There will Ik1 no tent, shed, tenement or other device to haihor tooVpakJnSi nor will the management take the slightest, cognizance of betting. We have ample financial backing to meet a loss if necessary and 1 r propose to begin the rejuvenation and upbuilding of racing in Louisiana on clean and proper lines. "Arthur McKuight. who lias started with much success! p tho Texas circuit, will do the starting and 1Jwlll go into the judges stand myself, besides making the program and doing the handicapping.-The test of the officials will be chosen with great care. The purses at the beginning will not be elaborate, but not one less than 00 will be offered."
