NOTES OF THE TURF. The feature race at the El Paso track New Years Day will be for a silver cup. in which local horse owners will ride their own animals. Dick Pending rode the winner of the first Irurdle raw run at the Havana meeting. The winner was George Lciper. from John Pangles stable. August Belmonts stallion, Hastings, is well reprer sented in the first six weeks of the Oakland racing, his get having won eleven races and ,725. John Dwyer, a former jockey, who at one time rode for S. C. Hildreth and James McCormick. committed suicide In a Los Angeles hotel last week. Such old campaigners as Modicum. Inflammable, The Dragon and Dewey are in training at Oakland. Some of these horses have been drawing carts since trey last raced. Orclian and Emma G. have been taken off the list of horses that may be started only once a week at Oakland, having schooled to the satisfaction of starter Dwyer. W. R. Grifiln lias now only three horses In his etable at Belmont Park, the lot consisting of Earl G.. Dr.: Pillow and a two-year-old filly. Dr. Pillow was - gelded a short time ago. John Stanton, who . was the. .first starter , of the .pntarlo Jockey Club and was- Interested in Canadian i j ; . racing affairs for over thirty years, died last Saturday at ills home in Whitby. Ontario. W. McKinuey has a consistent performer in Duke of Bridgewatcr, the gelding having won three races and finished second three times in as many starts since the opening of Santa Anita Park. Rome Respess has arrived at Montgomery Park, where he has some twenty thoroughbreds. Including yearlings, in training for an early campaign at Hot Springs in case racing is resumed there. Mrs. W. Walker, wife of the well-known horseman, W. Red Walker, sustained painful injuries one day last week when the thoroughbred she was driving ran away, throwing her heavily to the ground. Captain nackett will shortly ship several yearlings by Yellow Tall and Cunard from his ranch in Contra Costa County. Cal., to Oakland, to be framed by William Caliill for the juvenile races that will begin in January.
