Louisville. Ky.. May 18. — Features and incidents were plentiful at Churchill Downs this afternoon and kept the big attendance present well entertained. The cup race for gentlemen riders created great interest and enthusiasm among the smart set. which were abundantly on band in the clubhouse, while the other races gave the regulars thrills by spirited finishes. The desperate struggle that Oypsy King and Hyperion II. engaged in through tin stretch drive, ultimately resulting in their finishing a dead heat for the purse in the third race, was greatly appreciated and both horses were accorded liberal applause ou their return to the scales. Some ot the best amateur riders in the west and south had mounts in the cup raee. which was at a mile, and the laurels went to Mr. Pearce. who had the mount on Grenade. I In-usual ceremonies, such as the presentation of" the cup to tiie successful filler anil according him eon graduations, were duly carried out. The main incident of tin- afternoon, one that appealed mostly to the regular race-goers, was the dead heat between Hyperion II. and Gypsy King. For awhile owner Bedwell insisted ou running C| sy King back, but later gave in to Hpcrion II. s owners wishes and consented to split the purse. As it was a selling race tnith bear* had to be put up for auction. Gypsy King was entered to N soliK or . 00 ami Hyperion II. for MM, but under the les governing deat h« ats in selling races the amount that either horse won of the purse money is added to the entered sale price. This made Gypsy Kings sale nice .50 and Hyperion II. s sale price S7.5 ». When Oypsy King was offered for sab-Fred Luzader promptly hid him up to 05. but failed to get him. Hyperion II. did not command a raise. Owner Bedwell. in i-taliation. claimed Richard Reed, which had finished third, paying for him the small sum of 25. The mile and twenty yards handicap resulted in victory for the speedy Schultc filly. Gliding Belle, which incidentally broke the track record .a fifth of a second and came close to the American record of 1:10 for the distance. Gliding Belle forced the speedy Green Seal to quit before going a half mile. She then dashed into a long lead, but near the end had to be hard hustled to outstay Old Honesty. The latter, under a callable ride, made a game finish aud easily beat Wartield out in the final drive. Wartield was worked an additional quarter after the race, iu preparation for the La-tonia Derby, in which he is a certain starter. He was timed separately a mile and a quarter in 2:00t. The closing race resulted in a head victory for Rustle over Gerrymander, with the early pacemaker. Orlamlot. a nose back. Orlandot tried to run out on the stretch turn and came near to causing Rustles defeat when he forced her wide. Sir Cleges. in tiie second race, started from the barrier as if he would spreadeagle his opponents, and took a live-lengths MM in the first quarter, oat after rounding into the stretch he began tiring an 1 Zleuap barely failed to MM him. St. Elmwcod. M* of the choices, landing in third place. Pat I unne managed to take another purse when his two -year-okl Forez led home a fair band of youngsters in the opening scramble. There wt I anxiety for a while lest Redeem, wnieh tinishc I second, would lie displaced on account of having swerved and impeded some of the others, notabi.-I Betty Lester, but as no complaint was lodged the judges took no cognizance of the matter. Jockey Davenport was again lined 0 by the starter for disobedience at the post, Rrookleaf. which was to have started in the cup race, ran away three miles this morning while beinj; exercised. G. P. Jones purchased Black Boy from W. J. Young after the running of the second race, in which the colt was a starter. A selling race war is on in earnest. Up to the present H. G. Bedwell has been the principal sufferer. Bedwell this afternoon announced that ho would retaliate and bid up many of the winners of selling purses, as well as acquiring some racers by the claiming route.
